The Mawlawi Derwishes (XVI-XX centuries)

The order of the Mawlawi Derwishes, commonly called “whirling”, was established during the XIII century in Konya, Turkey

The Mawlawi order had undergone a slow but constant expansion until the advent of the Ottoman Empire. During that period many personalities of great importance in the world of culture and politics, interested in the philosophical and musical culture of the Mawlawi and in the thoughts of Jalal al-Din Rumi, adhered to the Order. In 1491 A.D., 86 Mawlawi takiyyas existed and during the following centuries the Order grew. Along with the Ottoman expansion it spread through the Islamic world with many centers connected with the Mother House in Konya
